All around the world, there are seemingly weird and outdated laws, and North Carolina is no exception. This state may be known for its barbeque pork and the creation of Krispy Kreme donuts and Pepsi Cola, but it still has its fair share of strange laws.
For proof, here are 10 weird laws in North Carolina that’ll have you scratching your head.
1. No Rollerblading on the Highway
There are a lot of laws that are so specific that there must’ve been an incident at one moment that caused the law to be written; this law is certainly one of them.
2. No Driving on Sidewalks
This is another one that’s so obviously unsafe that you wouldn’t think you need to write a specific law. You can be prosecuted for failing to drive with due care and attention, so it’s odd that this one needed to be on the books specifically.
3. You Can’t Use Elephants to Plow Cotton Fields
This is a very strange one because elephants are not indigenous to North Carolina. Did someone actually try to plow a field with an elephant, or perhaps the law was written up by people who were invested in the horse trade?
4. No Serving Bingo Players Alcohol
When you think of a rowdy bunch of people, your first thought almost certainly isn’t going to be of bingo players. Either the rules of bingo are a little different in North Carolina, or this is quite a strange law.
5. It’s Illegal to Throw Rocks in the Street
In North Carolina, there are laws that forbid rock throwing in the street. Again, there was probably an incident or collection of incidents that led to such a specific scenario being legislated against.
6. It’s Illegal to Ride a Bike Without Using Both Hands
Everyone knows that riding a bike without using your hands is not really a good idea, but most states don’t have a specific law that forbids it.
7. You Can’t Collect Reward Money for Yourself
If you’ve committed a crime and there’s a reward advertised for your capture and arrest, you can’t turn yourself in to collect the reward money. Believe it or not, someone actually tried this.
8. Legislated Font Sizes
In some cases, North Carolina law regulates the font size you can use. Restaurants in North Carolina are required to display menus that are readable by people sitting outside, but not readable by people in the street.
9. You Have to Pay Taxes on Your Illegal Drugs
This is quite a difficult law to follow because in order to follow it, you’d have to openly admit to breaking another serious one.
10. Notify the City Before You Enter in a Car
Forest City, NC, has a law that says you have to notify the city before you enter it in a car.
Digest These Weird Laws in North Carolina
Some of these weird laws in North Carolina actually have a reasonable explanation if you delve a little deeper. For example, the law about notifying the city if you plan to drive in it dates back to when cars were so loud they’d scare the horses in town, causing them to bolt.
But some of these other ones? We’re scratching our heads too.
